How To Make A Futon Cover

Futon covers are useful if you own a futon bed. Anytime you invite a guest over or otherwise want to pull your futon into a bed and use it, you can throw a futon cover on and have a nice clean space to sleep on. It is best to have a few of these around the home because you never know when you are going to need one. Especially if you like to entertain and have people stay over a lot, this is wise.

You can actually make your own futon cover if you like.

It is a quick and easy process and then you have the flexibility of making it look however you want!

First decide on what material to use. Go for durability over anything else here. If you are like most people your futon covers will go through a lot of wear and tear so it is all about strength and not so much about the look of things.

Cotton is a great choice because it is durable but also comfortable to sleep on. Cotton material comes in an array of different colors and patterns so you will have no problem finding fabric that is up to par. Cotton is also easy to work with so for those with little to no sewing experience, this would be an ideal choice. There are also polyesters, silks, satins and linens.

Once you have the material you simply lay it backwards on your futon bed, so the pattern or front of the material is actually lying over the futon. With the outside facing you, fold it along the arms of the futon and across the bottom, pinning as you go. A new pin should be used about every inch and a half or so. Then when you take it off you know where to sew.

Once you sew it all across the invisible seams you have made with your pins, you just flip it inside out and it will fit perfectly over the futon with the pattern or front side showing out.

Using a Futon Cover in a Child’s Bedroom

Traditionally thought of as seating units suitable for living room or guest bedroom areas, futons are great furniture items to have as children’s furniture. Whether sharing a bedroom with another sibling or needing extra space to house friends for a sleep-over, one of the most popular types of children’s furniture is a futon bunk bed. Different from a traditional bunk bed, these still have a traditional twin sized mattress at the top but the bottom is a full sized futon. Perfect for watching television, these retractable pieces provide additional seating and sleeping areas for children and their guests.

Since most children’s sheet sets do not include coordinating futon covers, how does a parent purchase their child a favorite cartoon character sheet set while ensuring a futon coordinates with the must-have sheets?

The answer is a solid-color futon cover.

Choosing the most dominant color in the child’s twin sized set, parents can order a futon cover in that color.

Additionally, if the sheets are cotton, jersey knit or another type of popular fabric, there are futon covers available in a heavyweight cotton or jersey knit which can further coordinate with the sheet set.

After the cover has been purchased, if looking to tie the cover into other elements of the child’s bedroom, a great idea is purchasing curtains or a valance in the same color. Finishing off the room, finding a throw rug featuring the cartoon character or purchasing a rug in the futon cover’s color is another great idea. While not required, to present a more formal appearance, if using the futon as a sofa during the day, parents can also purchase some accent pillows that coordinate with top sheets as well as a futon’s cover. This allows one cohesive look and draws attention to the futon as the bedroom’s focal point.
